Meet Mary Dene
Mary Dene is the founder of The Butler’s Pantry at Oaken Brow, a planning, design, and consulting studio rooted in a lifetime of entertaining and a belief that the most memorable experiences begin with thoughtfulness, preparation, and genuine welcome.
Those principles were first learned from her mother and refined over more than three decades of entertaining. For 24 years as the spouse of a senior officer, Mary hosted government and diplomatic officials, professional colleagues and their spouses, both at home and abroad. Twelve years living overseas further shaped her perspective on entertaining, culture, food, design, and the gracious traditions of welcoming people into one’s home.
Her earlier career in advertising and later in museum marketing, publicity, and development brought another dimension to her work: an understanding of presentation, communication, audience, and the importance of detail.
Today, Mary brings those influences together through The Butler’s Pantry—turning ideas into thoughtfully planned experiences and opening Oaken Brow for intimate cultural programs, photography, film, and other creative uses.
For Mary, the two are naturally connected: creating memorable experiences while giving a historic Virginia home a meaningful life in the present.

Oaken Brow’s story reaches back nearly two centuries and is intertwined with the people, land, and history of Virginia’s Northern Neck. Through occasional programs, lectures, and special opportunities to experience the property, we share its history while continuing to learn more about those who lived and worked here before us.

Our aim is simple: to bring interesting people and ideas together in a setting that makes the experience personal.
Salon Concerts
Music at Oaken Brow
Inspired by the European and American tradition of music performed in private homes, our salon concerts place musicians and guests together in the living room at Oaken Brow. With no stage and little distance between performer and audience, the experience is immediate, intimate, and wonderfully different from a conventional concert hall.
Preservation Through Use
A House with a Life
Historic houses survive when people continue to care about them. By opening Oaken Brow for music, lectures, photography, film, and select creative uses, we hope to preserve more than its architecture. We want to preserve the idea of the house as a place where people exchange ideas, experience beauty, and create new memories.
We are caretakers for our time—respecting Oaken Brow’s past while ensuring that it continues to have a meaningful life in the present, which can be passed on to the next generation.
